This week’s inspiration from Gartien which is a Malaysian pastry shop that specialises in making pineapple cakes and jam using home grown pineapples and other natural resources obtained in Penang. The drawing inspiration is from local farming culture and the characterisitics of raw ingredients. It uses unique features such as the farmers and texture of the pineapples. The illustrations are based on the Malaysian farmers – wearing the characteristic caps and wooden clogs in the sunny fields. The use of rice paper provides raw and fibrous texture both physically and visually. It uses natural colours, that helps tie the traditional feel towards it.
